Obesity is harmful for the brain
November 23, 2005
Researchers of a Swedish university have found out that obesity
is harmful to the brain for women, but it does not pose the risk
of dying for men who have suffered heart attacks. The study suggests
that women who have been obese throughout their lives are more likely
to lose brain tissue in the temporal lobe as compared with women
of normal weight.
Loss of brain tissue has been directly linked to cognitive decline
and it can increase the risk of Alzheimer's disease. Apart from
these, obesity is a known cause of heart disease. The study was
first to show that a higher body mass index is related to brain
atrophy. A significant relationship between body mass index (BMI)
and brain atrophy was found in the temporal lobe and the temporal
lobe is very important for a number of reasons, including hearing,
speech, language, comprehension, naming, memory, and visual processing.
Therefore obesity can result in some serious implications which
can prove fatal to our lives.
